174yds with a 22LR

I know this is petty compared to most the great longrange shots but this one has some sentimental value to me so I will share it.

The rifle was the first rifle (Remmington 541-S) I ever hunted with when I was 8 years old with my Father. Just a squirrel, but I was hunting with dad, and made a kill so I was proud. He left me the rifle when he died, and I never glance at it without thinking about that day.

Recently moved to MT and live on 15 acres with alot of critters.

I mounted the new Nikkon 22LR BDC scope on it, and did the data from the site for bullet drops for the CCI Velocinator ammo.

Saw this Raccoon at 174 yds, the first shot made her duck, the second hit home.

I tanned the hide and it came out very nice. I was amazed at how clean Raccoons are, at least comparted to coyotes.

Anyways, this is small stuff for this site, but it is a "long range hunt" given the pea shooter I was using and the target being small...Plus it was with "dads rifle" so it was bittersweet.

Hope you agree.

Congrats man! My favorite gun i own isn't exactly the most expensive or the most accurate i have either, it's an old T/C hawkens that my father built for my grandpa, and i got when grandpa passed away. I completely understand the feeling you get when you make a great kill with an inherited gun. Definately a strong connection. Congrats on the 170+ kill too! not a real easy task to most.

Thanks. It was a great experience. Don't "hunt" with the 22 much anymore.

174yds is a hell of a long shot with a .22Lr so congrats.

You are also shooting a pretty rare piece of history there. I bet I haven't seen a half dozen of those rifles in my life.

Take good care of it and never let it get away if you have or plan to have kids of your own someday.

Re: 174yds with a 22LR

One of my favorite rifles is a 22LR my father game me as well. First summer i had it i called my best friend up and we went out behind his place to look for some squirrels and crows. I set up at the base of a hill on the edge of a pond where a few crows settled in on the far side. I ranged a big crow at 121 yards, set up and squeezed a shot off and the crow folded. Neck shot pretty much put him out of commission on the spot! so far that would count as the furthest recorded shot with that rifle!

Congrats on that shot, heck of a shot

Thats great shooting. I was out developing some loads for my big rifles and happen to have my 22 with me. I was realy amazed how much more concentration and skill it took to shoot a good group at 100yd with the 22 than with 375H&H, 6.5-284 & 260AI. Besides it real hoot to watch the hole appear thru the scope.
Good shooting!!

that's great with a 22!

shooting at 200+ yards with my 22 is my current favorite type of shooting. i'd love to have a ringtail show up at that range.
