***1000 YARD COLD BORE SHOT (This Saturday)****

Well I may be going to shoot this weekend again and I thought maybe I could try a one shot scenario (like the real thing). I'm not really ready for it but thats why we practice right ? I usually shoot one shot then adjust my impacts and go from there to shooting 3 shot groups. This would put a little more pressure on me because I would have to read the wind just right to hit anywhere close to the target .

1. What size of circle would you guys say that I needed to be able to hit at 1000 yards?

2. How many of yall have tried this and what was your experience ?

3. Would you shoot a fowler shot not at the target but just because I plan on cleaning my barrel before I shoot this weekend ?

If I get to go shooting I will try and post some pics of how it goes

Thanks for any advice and happy shooting!!

1. What size of circle would you guys say that I needed to be able to hit at 1000 yards? That depends on your goal for the rifle and its intended use. If its for hunting whitetails, you have a vital zone in the 12x16" range. If you are hunting elk, its more like 20x24" vital zone. My rule of thumb is I like to hit targets about 1/2 the size of the vital zone so that you have a 50% margin of error in the field. That is not a very large target if your hunting deer!!!

2. How many of yall have tried this and what was your experience ? Most serious long range hunters do this all the time. Its called Practical Field Practice shooting. Find a target of opportunity, small 1/2 moa sized rock is idea, range, figure the shooting solution or look up hold over, set up and shoot just as you would in real life at a big game animal. Thats how we should practice. ITs important to get an idea how a rifle groups with a given load but groups mean nothing to the big game hunter, that first shot is all important.

3. Would you shoot a fowler shot not at the target but just because I plan on cleaning my barrel before I shoot this weekend ? Never shoot off a freshly cleaned bore. Even if I go out behind the shop and put a round into my bullet trap. Never take a serious shot out of a freshly cleaned bore, NEVER!

Kirby,

I'm sure glad to hear or read from you. It'd either been a while or I've been in my

In reference to Roy's reply I think you meant before Kirby answered.
From the time you posted to the time Kirby answered that was 14 hrs and 48 minutes or so...

Heard that Roy?
