Unhappy New rifle and problem

I got my new rem 700 stw. I loaded up a few rounds to try it out and all was well when I shot the first round and I went to extract the empty and it was stuck. I though crap what now, new rifle, new brass, medium load. I got it out shot another same thing bolt will lift but not extract well got it out. Now Im kinda worried, I used 74 grains of imr7828 ssc , new nosler brass, 215gm primer and 160 speer bullets. mid charge load, magnum primer, loaded to the oal of in speer book.

I unboxed the rifle and cleaned it good, I cleaned the chamber and barrel good so I know there wasnt excess oil in it. New brass loads great, the stuff i just shot is hard to chamber. Any Ideas

Re: New rifle and problem

Might have to have your smith polish the chamber...

Also, 74gr of 7828 SSC doesn't sound like a medium load for a 160gr bullet...But Inalso don't load Speer bullets.

You sound like you have excess pressure, and if you have flattened primers you might wanna back the load way down and work your way up till you get slight pressure signs like sticky bolt or flattened primers.

Also, not every rifle will have the same max loads. Max load for one rifle might be a medium load for another.

Re: New rifle and problem

How about a little more information?

Unmodified factory rifle?
Any marks on the fired cases?
When you say the bolt handle lifts easy after firing, does that include the last 1/4" of travel?
If you mic the diameter of the fired brass, does it taper from about an 1/8" in front of the belt all the way to the shoulder?
When you rechamber the fired brass is it difficult to remove?

Re: New rifle and problem

for mudrunner2005 the manual calls for 72-76 gr of 7828. I went with 74gr and it just so happened that it was about -10deg f outside, thats why I am kinda baffled. This is the first time I have ever seen any issues with handloads , especially when the loads come from manuals.

orwapitihunter, the rifle if factory new ,2 rounds down it. the only mark I can see on the brass is there looks like tool marks on the shoulder of the case, rings around it. the bolt lifts all the way up, because all I had to do is bump the bolt back with an open hand and it opened up. When I mic a case it is .515 in front of the belt, shrinks to .490 right at the shoulder. yes when I try to rechamber the fired brass it is hard to close and to extract

Re: New rifle and problem

Well I'm sure that it is not my reloads. I went and loaded up 2 rounds with diffrent powder lowest load show, first was 75gr h1000 case stuck, second was 66gr of H4831sc that case stuck also. So I assume its the rifle. I think im going to have to head to a smith.

Re: New rifle and problem

Sounds like you don't have enough primary extraction.
