You will probably get many different opinions on this but this is mine.

For the Large ,powerful cartriges I like a barrel with at least a 3" to 3.5"shank
and a minimum contour with a .700 muzzle diameter. (Something near a #5 Lilja)

I personally like the #6 or #7 Contour ( .750 and .825 at the muzzle)

That depends on what weight rifle you are wanting to end up with.
If you are a sheep hunter on foot for a week in the mountains my guess is that you will not enjoy carrying a big fat heavy barrel around with you?
Like wise if you are doing a heap of shootin at the range it is no good having ultra slim spaghetti noodle type barrel either.

I have just started reloading and have 7mm stw I want to reload for any suggestions for bullets and powder combinations to start with for hunting whitetail deer in North Carolina. I don't know rate of twist for barrel I bought it used and is Weatherby mark v deluxe action with custom barrel. If somebody could tell me how figure out the twist I would as I know it is important for bullet weight selection. Also does anybody know a good place to get brass for it?

Easiest way I've found is to pull a cleaning rod through the bore with a brush on it. Mark the rod near where it's coming out(action or muzzle-doesn't matter here) and pull it until the mark is at the same spot rotation wise again, say 12 o'clock both times. Measure the distance after you mark again, and that's roughly your twist.

For deer sized game, most of the 140- 160 grain loads in the previous pages will work well, with rl22, 7828, retumbo, rl25 and a few other powders being notable. Keep her close to full (charge wise)and use enough primer and you'll be fine.

Awesome Riverman, where are you going and how did you get the tags. I've never shot an Elk and I'd like to get a tag next year. Got any pics of the rifle?
