338NM action??

I am looking to build a 338nm and need some help with choosing a custom action. I know alot of guys are using standard remington long actions but i prefer custom with the larger calibers. I know ill hear the usual suspects like bat, stiller, defiance, etc. All those are definite candidates for the job but what i am looking for is a STANDARD sized action to take advantage of the norma's shorter case. So basically a .750" bolt face in a standrd long action to cut down on weight. But id also like a repeater (kinda the point of the norma). If ur guys have any recommendations id really appreciate it.

You might check out the Templar V2 from GA Precision. They have a .750 bolt body and still fit a standard LA 700 footprint.

What you are describing, a "short" 338 LM repeater for 338 NM on a custom action, is almost a contradiction in terms. The reason someone goes to a custom action is better quality, no "truing", and a design needed to match the cartridge they are interested in using. Custom action makers see it as a small market and focus on supporting 338 LM, not 338 NM. That means the action is longer to support the longer cartridge OAL - especially in a repeater. Also, going to a "shorter" action significantly reduces your projectile options - pretty much forget shooting 300 gr Bergers or SMKs from the magazine.

Frankly, I'd look at the BAT HR and stop there. If you want more options, see the 338 LM tab at http://www.elr-resources.com/Receive...2012082013.xls You MAY be able to save another half inch by considering the GAP Templar - see Templar Action and CALL to confirm. [They no longer post overall lengths. At one point I had info that they were the shortest repeater at 8.2".]

Re: 338NM action??

I have 2 Defiance, one is dbm, and other is AI mag fed. Both are same model action. Have to look at rifle to see. One with bottom metal is 7-2 oz packer,w/ abs wrap Saturn. I shoot same load out of both as they where cut very close to the same. They are both shooters, coal to lands is 3.675 w/berger OTM.

Re: 338NM action??

I would probably recommend a Defiance Rebel with standard 1.4" tenion or a Bat HR or HRPIC receiver for what your looking to do. Sounds like you want lightest weight possible but not the reduction in strength.

There really are no SHORTER actions that will support this chambering. Basically, you still need the full length receiver as far as bolt throw and magazine length goes.

While the case is shorter, having the added length offered in a longer DM system will result in the ability to seat the best long range bullets out where they should be and not taking up case capacity.

Plus, a long action will feed more smoothly then anything that would be shorter in length with this diameter of a case. If it were me, for a lighter packing rifle, my choice would be the Defiance Rebel short tenion or BAT HR.

That is exactly what im looking for kirby. I want a standard remington footprint with a standard DM but i dont want the extra "beef" that some of the actions with a .750" bolt have. Kirby hit the nail on the head with the rebel. I havent seen the price on that BAT yet, im sure its a pretty penny. Also i checked out the GAP templar v2...and its beautiful, i just cant find a price. I really appreciate all the fast responses. I was hoping 115vld would have some imput as well. Thanks everyone

Edit: also i want to add a 40moa rail to the top instead of a 20moa which is why i havent ordered a deffiance deviant with a .750" bolt because i love that action. Please excuse the typos, i am typing on a kindle. Thanks

Re: 338NM action??

I currently have a Bat HR PIC in process that I will be setting up for a switch barrel set up. I will be able to swap bolts up or down for different size bolt heads. This will allow me to always run the same platform. I like this action.
