300 norma or 338 edge custom rifle build

I'm having difficulty deciding between the 300 norma or the 338 edge for my next longrange rifle. With this comes the question of which action to use. I have been having trouble finding information on the 300 norma. I have only read one article on the round and it peaked my interest. Any information and advice would be helpful. Thank you

Re: 300 norma or 338 edge custom rifle build

Norma would be my choice. My buddy had one built this year and it's a great gun.
He went with a rem700 action and a Lila 26 1-10. His gun shoots great!!
With 91gr of Re33 and a 210LRAB sailing at 2980fps, it works really good.
His only regret is not ordering a 28" barrel. It wld be well worth the extra $$$ and wait..
Both are great rifles, Norma's are a little more efficient cartridge.
Good luck.

In the upper right of this forum is a search function, use it,will have lots of good info.If you are considering edge you should also include 338 Norma in your search, along with 338 lapua,or 338 RUM,there all in same type performance level. Then there are also the improved type 338 LAI,338 AX,the list goes on with the 338's.Im bias toward 338 for energy at 1000+

Re: 300 norma or 338 edge custom rifle build

I have just got my fireform gun done in what we are calling 300 FOG. It is an improved 300 norma, and I have made 80 pieces of brass so far. I use 338 norma since this way my false shoulder is all ready there to headspace from. Ever since Shawn showed me a 338 norma case, I wanted a 30 for the big bergers.

So far the fireforming load has shot a .115 and a .225, this is with 220 scenars @ 2943. I couldn't help myself, so I made up a ladder with 5 brass. 230 hybrid targets ahead of 96,97,98,99, and 100 grs of 33... I hit pressure at 100 by feel AND measurement of the head. My workable velocity will be about 3,160 and down, the top load (too much) went through the ohler at 3,205. Looks like my 338 LIMP might just be a shelf piece!

Tom

Going next weekend to get the real ones, sister rifles for my buddy and I.

Re: 300 norma or 338 edge custom rifle build

What is the gun going to be used for. Paper is a lot different than a animal. The edge is a pretty good cartridge. But if the norma is only doing 2980 fps area I would say you should go with the 300 ultra or there would be nothing wrong with the 300 win. I have seen them do 2875-2925fps with the 215 berger. And that was not using reloader 33. I would just need more info to say what would be the best.

This rifle will be for long range elk and deer hunting. This rifle will be my next step up from the good old 7mm rem.

If past a mile 338, the energy the 300 grain bullets carry is not recoverable from a 30.

According to some on here, if you just add a wyatts box to your 7, it out to out pound a 30 all day. Boy was I sorry I searched for 7 rem mag data!
