Re: 230 gr Berger OTM Transonic

I have only shot the 215 grain berger hybrid out of my 300 wm. Its a 5r milspec 26 inch barrel. Using rws brass with H1000 74 grains. I didnt think the hybrid was supposed to be depth sensative, but working a load up has been a chore. I am looking to hit steel at 1 mile and Im getting 2875 from my oehler and 3.62 coal will give me 1 inch at 100 yards and stay ss past 1760( I am not happy with that group size). I shoot the berger 175 otm in my 5r in 308 and they drive tacks, under .5 moa. last week the 308 did a 3 shot 7 inch group at 1k. Are the 230's tangent or secant ogive. I am ready to try another projectile, I know this gun will shoot better.

Re: 230 gr Berger OTM Transonic

I'm really getting nervous, I have the belief that 230 gr. bullet out of a 26" barrel
in a 300 Win Mag,
should be kept at 2750 fps MAX. Velocities higher that that are trouble invitations.
That's a big bullet my friends.

For the 300 RUM, the 230 gr. bullet would have it's MAX at about 2965 fps.

Some numbers are getting close to that with the 300 win. Mag.

Pretty scarry!!!!

You are correct Eaglet. At least from our testing. At 4100 feet of altitude with H-1000 we got to 2775 safely from a 28" Broughton 5C. Tested with an Oehler 35P . This barrel is a proven fast shooter with 210's too (2916 fps) . This was done in Lapua brass that has one of the most generous case volumes we have tested. Much more than RWS. We saw pressure a couple grains above this even in Lapua brass. So velocities above this from a 300 win and I feel one should be careful, or try the load in a different chronograph.

I have been playing with my new 30-375R in a 26" Spss 700 Rem.

Initial testing is showing 29-2950fps with the 230otm over a 35P, looking forward to getting it back after barrel fluting & putting the pressure gear on it

Initial accuracy is looking good
