230 gr Berger OTM Transonic

I located a spot on the ranch where I can shoot 2076 yds. ...unfortunately, 1k to almost 2k is wooded creek bottom. So, it's going to be a big leap to get there.

The biggest cartridge I have is 300 Win Mag and I currently have a .5 MOA load running the Berger 230gr OTM at 2460 fps. I'm pretty sure I can push it a good bit faster or more precise. I just never had a reason to try before now.

Nonetheless, it doesn't seem like much hope of remaining supersonic the whole distance. So, has anyone tested the 230 gr OTM for extreme distance including transonic?

Or, does anyone have suggestions for pushing a 300 Win Mag this far?

On the one hand, I'm not looking for an MOA X Ring cold bore knockout. But on the other hand, I don't see much point in having projectiles tumbling all over the countryside.

Is it a waste of time trying to walk it to within a few MOA with a good bullet/load in 300 Win Mag?

Or, do I need to bite the bullet right from the start and build a 338 Edge?

...or, a big 7mm and hope the Berger 195 turns out as many hope it will?

Since this would be a fairly specialized/limited task, I'd probably just rebarrel my Savage 12 F-Class.

Thanks!

Re: 230 gr Berger OTM Transonic

Richard, here is the data I have that may help some. First we easily push them to 2775 from a 28" Broghton chambered in 300 Win. with H-1000

2nd, We were sending some last week from a larger cased 300 with a MV of 2877 mv. We took this rifle to 1800 yards and they were easily kept on the rock we were shooting even with some wind. The rock was about 3 moa wide and if the wind was consistant I feel holding 1 moa with them was very doable.

Now if you are simply wanting to kill some rocks, steel or paper, I say go for it. If you intend to hunt at this distance, then I like your thinking of a 338.

Thanks Jeff. Great info.

What altitude?

I'm at 456 ft ASL.

Not hunting ELR. ...looking to kick it up a notch.

Just paper/steel at this distance.

Thanks!
Richard

I think we were about 5500 ft for the 1800 shots. The velocities were at 4100 feet.

I think you will be ok. I can tell you we have sent a lot of the 300gr Berger OTM's into the subsonic velocities and they do super. Sometimes so well I am afraid to talk about it.

Sounds good for starters.

Now, I've gotta work on a load with H1000 and figure out how to get enough elevation.

Thanks!

I've shot them out to 1,547 yards and they did well. I'm getting a MV of 2,807fps out of my 28" Hart and at my elevation they weren't transonic or anything but they shot well. I think Bryan Litz shot them at a mile with the 300 grain OTM and they did well.
