LR 308 in 18" or 20"

I am completing a custom build and am curious is anyone have reason to suggest one length being better than the other. The specific purpose will be long range shooting. I understand barrel make up, chrome lined and all but am specifically looking at optimal lenght. My understanding is that you only lose about 30 fps on the 18" and 20" provides an optimal burn off. The 18" also could provide a bit more rigid barrel and more stable platform. I am not sure if there will be a noticeable difference and am curious for thoughts. I am considering Noveske, Black Hole, DPMS, and a couple others but am open to suggestions on make as well.

Last, any personal experience with Vortex or PFI scopes?

Rock River makes a LAR8 model in many variations!

Rock River Arms: RRA LAR-8 .308/7.62

I called Rock River last week and they had a 20" varmint A4 in stock! However, you have to go through a RRA dealer to get it.

From my understanding, very hard to beat!

Flip a quarter & take which ever is available You won't see much of a practical difference between 18" & 20" in a .308, there really isn't a winner/loser here.

Bang for the buck, the PST is a good scope but the glass sucks in mine YMMV.

Thanks for the responses. I think I will go with an 18 inch barrel.

As for the scope, does anyone have experience with the Falcon Menace series of scopes? I have heard some good things about them, but never looked through one myself. I am looking for a high quality long range scope in the $550 and under range. Hopefully it exists.

Suprised to hear this, i have a PST 6-24x50 sfp and when compared to my buddies mark 4 there is almost no discernable differance in clarity. I would highly recommend this scope and Outlaw 6.0 if yours is that bad i would send it back. thier customer service and warranty is excellent.

If this custom build is just needing a barrel to complete, I suggest a Pac-Nor barrel this is what Noveske uses and will save you $$ If the LR build is to be used at long range why not the DPMS 24" SS barrel? The complete rifle can be purchased for $1200.00 My 2 cents ART

Re: LR 308 in 18" or 20"

I have the barrel and am now looking for a top quality scope (under $600). I think I have narrowed them down to the following below. Can anyone compare those on the list?

Pride Fowler Rapid Reticle Evolution 3-12 x 42

Zeiss Terra 3x 4-12 x 42

Nikon M308 BDC 4-16 x 42

Falcon Menace 4-14 x 44

Vortex Viper (not pst) 6.5 - 20 x 50, Diamondback 4-12 x 40, or Crossfire 4-12 x 40 lines
