I have been thinking and I suppose I had better build an AR while they are still legal. I am thinking along the lines of the radicals and want one with some fire power. so I am thinking 308 for several reasons. cheap to reload for lots of them around and can do some damage if need be. I hope to never need it for the purpose I am building it for but I think I should have one just the same. Here is that I am thinking. I want a highly accurate and dependable compact set up. something that can e packed around or thrown in a pack of some sort. Dependability is key. I am thinking a flat top reciever but not set on it. I would like to put a scope on it but also have the ability to fall back on a secondary type of sights. I know very little about ar's so someone give me an idea of where to start. I would like to do a custom barrel unless there is someone out there that sells an accurate pre barreled upper. I am all ears!I will be slowly buying this in parts and do not want to skimp on anything.

Any thing that you can legally have in a 308 AR is gonna be in the AR10 set up which is gonna be heavier and bulkier. If you are wanting it for home protection, I would just get a short barrelled 223 (18 inch) or a short barrelled 12 ga with 00 buck shot. I myself would rather have the shotgun. No matter where you hit with 00 buckshot, it will most likely bleed out at that close of a range. I GUARRANTEE you that if it doesn't bleed out that it will never be using whatever you hit EVER again (I.E. leg, arm).

The AR10 is gonna weigh 1 to 2 lbs more than an AR15. If you are wanting to shoot things at a long distance then yeah an AR10 is good. But if it is for home defense, you probably wont ever be shooting past 200 to 300.

I wasn't asking for caliber advice. I'm looking for pointers on where to start building a 308. What parts are Best etc...

There are a lot of guys here that have more experience building them than I do, Mike. But I've been researching a build for a while as well.

As for the parts that I keep looking at.....

Lower Receiver---Armalite seems to have a solid following for the quality.
AR10 ARMALITE LOWER RECEIVER ANODIZED

Upper assembly---Dtech. I like the way this guys seems to think. Plus, he's been into the AR's for quite a while. So he should have some experience behind him. I don't know what his lead times are, since I haven't made it far enough in my own project to find out. But here's a link

Ya I heard the crime rate is pretty bad in Basin Wyoming. Lots of gang activity. Luckily your pretty good with a Bo Staff and num chucks.

My apologies. You said that you were "thinking" about building a 308 so I thought you were still wondering what caliber.

For me, I like Rock River Arms uppers and lowers. You can get the uppers and lowers from Les Baer and other custom gun makers if you are willing to spend that kind of money.

Where I like to spend my money on really good parts is the barrel, trigger (timney or gisselle) and the moving parts such as the bolt carrier and the bolt. I would go custom on all three of those if anything else. I have a Satern barrel on mine (satern is an AR barrel CO.) and I really like it. Many custom barrels that you can go with though. You can get a Les Baer bolt carrier, bolt and barrel but it is gonna cost you but it will be TOP knotch.

The (free floated) forend you can just go with DPMS or another company. I prefer the ventilated ones to help the barrel cool.

Gas tube and gas block, you can just go with any on midwayusa as well.

I am really liking the magpul buttstock because you can adjust the stock for cheek rest height and for your length of pull. Its kind of like customizing your fit. It is heavier and pricey but very nice.

As for the charging handle, I like the Vltor BCM Gunfighter Mod 3 Large charging handle assembly for the AR-10. It is very nice with the extension on it especially if you have a scope because you can use the charging handle from the side without having to squeeze your hand between the charging handle and the scope.

All the parts that go in the lower recieve can be solved by just buying a lower reciever parts kit from midwayusa.

You will need a nice ergonomic pistol grip. Magpul and other companies make nice ones.

Buffer and buffer spring..just your run of the mill ones will work for this.
