AR10 scope mounting

Just bought my first black rifle DPMS 308 Flat Top and have a Leupold 8.5x25x50mm I want to put on it.Im gonna use Leupold Mark 4 rings on the rail.Someone told me that I absolutley have to use high or super high rings on any AR because of the straight stock.Ive always used the lowest rings possible when scoping anything Ive owned such as hunting rifles and pistols.Does this NOT apply to the AR? Let me know your thoughts.Thanks!

While it's generally a good idea to scope as low as possible, "as low as possible" on an AR is still way up there. ARs have two problems with scope mounting: eye relief and height. You need to get the scope well forward (especially if you shoot NTCH) and up. LaRue, Bobro, and others make mounts for ARs that address these very well. If you need the eye relief, I highly recommend one of these one-piece mounts. If you don't, then normal high or extra high rings will work.

The concern will be the charging handle. If you mout your scope to low you will not be able to charge your weapon.

Check out the Nightforce unimount or American defence machine SPR mount

Badger tactical charging handle latch works well with a low scope.

Go with which is more comfortable, and alows you to quickly sight through the scope, natrual like.

NTCH, go forward mounted scope. One peices are nice.

Midway USA posts the rise of most Manufactures mounts. I found this very usefully when calculating my AR scope height . Burris tactical low on a Burris Fullfield 3x9 .
It shoots much better after getting rid of high mounts . As low as possible . I removed the foam sleeve on my skeleton stock , replaced it with cloth camo tape. Needs alittle insulation you know.

Not knowing what you are built like, but for myself I have a long neck and used Burris extra high tactical rings with a Burris Fullfield II 3X9 on my DMPS lo-pro and it fits me perfect.

ICANHITHIMMAN brings up an excellent point and I know that even with the extra high rings it doesn't leave much room to grab the charging handle.

You also have to be concerned with a longer scope such as yours and it being a 50mm I don't know if mediums or low will allow you to mount the scope without it resting on the gas check piece.

Lay the scope on the gun and try to measure the distance from the flat top to the bottom of the scope tube and you will answer your question if low or mediums will work

Most often the one-piece mounts have the height just about spot on. I usually use the Armalite one piece mounts, they have them in 1" and 30mm. They have the forward offset to them so you can mount the scope far enough forward and I've found they work well for most people. The only 'iffy' use it when using the ACE skeletal stock that has the foam padding around the receiver extension. In that case you can get down on the scope, but a little bit higher mount would be nice due to the padding.
