AR-10 .308 Bullet ????

I have a DPMS .308 Oracle it has 16'' barrel 1and 10 twist.
What weight of bullet would you load up ? I am thinking about the 168 SMK or a Hornady AMAX . I plan on shooting it from 50 to 1000 Yards. Should I try the 175's ? What would you load ?

Thanks

Bigbuck,

Not with a 168, anyway. Total waste of time for these ranges, or for anything much beyond 700 yards or so. The 175s would be a better choice, but the 16" barrel is going to hamper you regardless of which bullet you choose. The 1x10" twist will handle anything up to and including the 190s or 200 grain match bullets, but how well they do so all the way out to 1,000 yards will be the big question here. We recently built several AR-10, M110 competitive Long Range Service Rifles, and built them around the Berger 185 Hybrid. These are full-size 20" barrels, and we went with a 9.3" twist, just for a little added insurance here.

Might want to try some various combinations, but I think that 16" barrel is going to be the big drawback for the long range stuff.

Thanks Kevin for all of the info . I have a friend that is wanting to purchase a AR-10 with a heavy barrel 20'' he wants my AR with the 16'' barrel it is brand new so he and I may trade tomorrow. I am a sucker when it comes to the bull barrels or fluted heavy barrels . What brand name barrel did yall run on the service rifles that you mentioned?

Re: AR-10 .308 Bullet ????

BigBuck,

I just brought a thread forward (AR-10 in the works) that chronicled the building of these guns, with most of the specifics about barrel, gas port size, funtioning, etc.. Take a look through this, and it may answer most of your questions. The barrels are Satern 1x9.3", set up around the Berger 185s. We're spinning them faster than they need for straight stability, hoping to keep them flying true as the enter into the transonic range. It's a tough go with a 308 in almost any format, which is why all the 1,000 Yard 308s you see out there (such as the Palma guns) are very specifically built, and have a very narrow window of application. A thousand yards is asking a lot out of a 308 case, and virtually everything has to be optimum to get them to work.

Take a look at the thread, and if you have any questions, be happy to answer them!
