I would bet because the balance would be horrible. My hr is already front end heavy. That being said I have been thinking the same thing. I love shotgunning and will try anything to get a touch more performance. I would love a ammo company to release higher pressure slugs for dedicated slug guns like my hr.

I think the manufacturers think you won't be shooting over 75 yards, just like our authorities who forced these guns upon us to "save the children"

Re: Here's a thought

Living in a shotgun county there are only 3 real choices, savage slug hunter, smokeless muzzle loader, or a long range pistol.

Re: Here's a thought

The barrel on the savage is pretty skinny. I think it is one of the lightest guns I own. Given the recoil, I would not mind a heavier barrel, quite frankly.

The barrel length thing could again be related to the paradigm that these guns are for use in thick brush at close range. It might be related also to the type of powder that they burn, which might have properties more akin to pistol powder ?

Re: Here's a thought

You are forgetting the hr ultra slughunter. After owning that and the savage my hr is the more accurate gun. This does have a heavy barrel. If I could get performance out a a longer barrel i would do it in a heartbeat. I have been told cutting a good crown can also help, but I can make one hole already so not sure I wanna take that chance. I would love more velocity for the longer shots.
