I am having a problem getting a load to work in my fireformed brass. My fireforming load is 43gr RL22 and a berger 105 seated to fit my magazine. It shoots .25 MOA out to 800 yards. I kneck sized the brass with a redding knecksizing die, kept my seating depth the same and I am getting 8 to 10 inch groups at 500 yards. My velocity spread is over 200fps average. Goes from 3200 to 3400 fps. The fireform loads had a spread of 6fps. Every thing shoots right on at 100 yards. My ladder test looked like a benchrest group. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

So I got a few of above, some Lapua brass, some BR2's and all the usuals - BLC-2, Varget and RL-15. In Hornady's book, max Varget load is 43.2 and RL15 is 41.4 but not the exact same set of components. I google to just compare and tons of people are loading several grains above that with both powders as their warm load. What gives? Hornady's book a little light? I am not interested in a nuclear load but where's this discrepancy coming from?

Berger 115 VLD Match bullet and Antelope

Well I have a chance to go Antelope hunting. There were a large of left over tags for an area close to me. Problem was I only had one gun sighted in...

Well I have a chance to go Antelope hunting. There were a large of left over tags for an area close to me. Problem was I only had one gun sighted in and no ammo loaded for it as everything I had shot in it was factory loads and I couldn't find anymore overnight. Plus that gun weighs a ton and I use it mainly for targets. Its a Rem 700 VSF .308 with a H.S. Precision tactical stock with the adj comb and butt.
SO yesterday I assessed my reloading components to see what I had. Found I had a new box of 115 Berger's in .25 Cal. A can of Hodgdon Retumbo. 100 rounds of CCI LR primed .25-06 Ackley improved cases and everything else was just a hodgepodge of a little bit of this and a little bit of that. With there not being a hell of a lot of reloading info on the .25-06 AI in print and most of the info out there being from other reloaders which is not always reliable ::) so it took me about an hour of digging on the net and after looking at a ton of different web sites and info from other loaders on what the do I found two different posts using the components I had on hand. One said max loading and the other said nothing. and both were close. 8-)
I flipped a coin on what load to use with both my final choices just a bit below where the one that said MAX LOADING said he was at and loaded up 10 rounds. ;D Nothing like a gamble is there.
I then headed for the range about 15 miles away. Beautiful day, no wind, warm. NICEEE 8-)
After sitting up my Prairie Dog bench and putting up a target at 100 yds. ( This consists of putting up a sheet of cardboard about 4' square and placing a 1" adhesive dot on it at 100 yds) ::)
I settled down to shoot. Wouldn't you know it, the wind started to come up. >:( Oh well, your here lets get it done.
1st shot was 16"s to the left. Adjust, 2nd shot was 4"s to the right and 5"s low. Adjust 3rd shot was 2"s high and 1" to the right. Adjust. 4th shot. HMM can't find it. Shoot again 5th shot can't find it. ??? 6th shot still can't find it. >:( >:( >:( What the heck????
So I get up off my dead ass and walk down to the target to see if I can tell what happened. Got a bit of a surprise. I had a 3/8" group dead center in the 1" circle. Thought what the heck, went back and fired 4 more rounds and still all in the circle but one. Dang wind caught me. >:( Looks good to me. Easiest load development I have ever had that worked. And I don't know what kind of rifle that guy was shooting but I have one with a custom match chamber in a Hart barrel and believe me, that load is no where near the max for it. If all is correct I should be getting about 3200 fps with the Berger but I think I can get up to 3300 with it with a bit more tweaking but that can wait. Got an Antelope to kill and no more time to work up loads. I didn't like the soot though that gathered around the neck on a fired case. Could be the Retumbo or too light of a load. I will have to experiment with that load later. It shoots good enough to hunt with for now though.
The rifle is a custom built Rem 700 .25-06 Ackley Improved with a 26" Hart barrel and McMillian stock with 6.5X20X40 LR Leupold with varmint reticule.

I'm new to long range shooting and new to reloading. I'm shooting a Ruger 300 Win Mag. How many shots should I expect my Brass to last? Obviously I know to always inspect as things can happen and it could be junk after one firing. But generally, how many times can brass be fired and still be good?

i'll be loading some once fired Winchester brass, the silver brass used in the Winchester Supreme Ballistic Silver Tips.

Thanks for the help!

Hello,
let me start off by saying that I am not an expert reloader, but I know the basics and I've done ok so far. I will try to explain the problem I'm having the best I can.
Equipment: Redding 3pc S-type bushing die set for 300WSM, Remington brass, 210 Berger VLD's and Fed 210 primers with 64.5 grns of H4350.

I've loaded 100 rounds of the above load with all new brass. I've shot those 100 rounds and I've started over reloading the "once fired" brass. This is where I ran into a problem. I ran the cases through the decapping/neck sizer die, cleaned my primer pockets, checked my lengths, ran the cases through the full length body resizing die, then chambered a empty brass to check for proper fit. Everything was fine. After all this I just happened to be tinkering and I put a mic on the mouth/neck of one of the once fired brass (after I had done all my resizing) and noticed that it was a little bigger than the measurments from my new brass. I picked up a bullet and noticed that it had no tension on it as I slid it back and forth through the neck/mouth ofthe case. The neck would not hold the bullet....it's too big after I resized?? It just slides in and out freely with no tension to hold the bullet in place.

What am I doing wrong? I think I have my dies set correctly according to my manuals and stuff. Is there a problem with my die? Is it not resizing the neck back down correctly? I'm stumped here. The bottom of my die and my shell holder just alsmost touch when the ram is at full stroke just like it's supposed to. Why is the mouth opening to big for the bullet??

Remember I'm basically a newby to reloading as far as my knowledge of problem solving like this, but I've been reloading since I was tall enough to stand in a chair and pull the handle on the ram down and I've never had the problem before.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Encountered something new today. Worked up a load using the brass i have been using for about 250 rnds using Win brass and only neck sizing. Well found a load my rifle liked and figured it was time to use new brass. No pressure signs from old brass. No flattened primers at all at even near max loads? Well double checked new load again with old brass and was promising.Used new Win brass. Full length sized, deburred flash holes trimmed and prep like i usually do. So loaded new brass. Weighed powder ,the same AOL. Ran out of primers from previous box so opened new box and started loading. Same type primers WLR. Got to range and started out good but got worse. AFter 5 shots groups starting opening up and had flyers? Let gun cool to ambient temp between strings. Looked at brass after a couple of shots and found flattened primers? Also had 6 primers from old box left before i used new box. Loaded 28 rnds with load developed. 6 rnds did not have flattened primers but the rest did? The new brass felt different when seating bullets also. Old brass would start tight then just almost seem to just push the bullet in? I guess I should have annealed the old brass but did not and do not know how to do that properly. Read a couple of articles but I am still not sure? One article talked about overworking brass and making it hard. I guess i did just that. So what did I learn? When the bullets do not feel like the brass is holding them right and seating them becomes real easy get new brass or anneal old cases. Primers from different lots are different. Well I hope this info helps some other reloaders out there. What a frustrating day but i learned something in the end.
