I am trying to decide what round to use for my next build. I want to go with some variation of the 6.5mm. I am open to wildcats as well as conventional rounds. I want the best mix in regards to inherent accuracy and velocity. This will most likely be a midrange to longrange hunting and target gun. So, any suggestions and practical experience is definately welcomed. Thanks in advance.

This topic comes up over and over so I'm going to ask the question? If you could buy a bullet with a higher B.C. than anything manufactured by the major bullet makers and one that would open reliably at long range and was still effective at close range, how much would you pay for same? I've been making bullets for 5 years now and make one that will do just that! I have only produced them for family and a few friends with no previous intention of selling them. If I thought it was worthwhile, I might give it some thought. I started doing this for the same reasons that I hear constantly on this forum. POOR performance except at narrow range bands. I only make .308 currently but here is a sample of B.C's. 180gr.(.675) 210 gr.(.787) 225 gr.(.843) I guess if I was going to do this, I would need to become a sponsor, so this is not an ad. Just looking for feedback?...Richlightbulb

I recently returned from a trip to Kyrgyzstan where I hunted ibex. For the last twenty or so years, I have mainly hunted big game with a bow, but get plenty of centerfire time in for prairie dogs, rock chucks and coyotes/foxes. Several years ago, when the short-magnum wars were still just a "police action", I purchased a Remington 673 in the 300 Rem SA Ultra Mag. I was after a compact, hard-hitting rifle that would carry easily in a scabbard. Accuracy was important, but not everything. I had previously sold a Sako 300 Rem Ultra Mag because it's long barrel and viscious bark made it unpleasant to both shoot and carry. Anyway, after sighting in the 673, I fired one shot at a bull elk at 65 yards. He dropped like a stone, I went back to bowhunting, and the 673 sat in the gun safe for the next several years.

When the chance to hunt in Kyrgyzstan came up this fall, I had to register a rifle with my paperwork, and assumed the 673 would be up to the task. I didn't even realize the rifle and cartridge had become a victim of the 300 WSM. As the hunt drew nearer, and I became more aware of the potential shot distances (500+ yards), I got a little spooked and headed to the range. My fears were founded as several different loads failed to deliver the needed accuracy. I had no choice but to take the gun anyway. Sure enough, on day 2, I missed a beautiful ibex at 488 yards, and had a long horse ride back to camp cursing my lack of prep time before the hunt. Two days later, I took a nice billy at 225 yards, and enjoyed a fabulous hunting experience.

I headed home determined to purchase a new rifle. At airports on the way home, I got to talk to several sheep hunters, and was surprised to find that most had abandoned the short mags and returned to long actions, with a majority favoring the time tested 300 Win Mag. Two had Christensen Arms in 300 Rem Ultra Mags, and both were looking to get rid of them because of accuracy problems. These two guys were at different airports and unacquainted. Both planned on a 300 Win Mag.

Sorry. Long story for a short question. I have a great gun store at home, with a healthy inventory. I determined to pick a rifle based solely on what I liked the best, price be damned. Hands down, the Sako Finnlight in 300 Win Mag. Thoughts??? Lightweight vs. Accuracy? Lightweight vs Recoil? One friend insists that a decent rifle for long range sheep hunting should weigh a minimum of 10 lbs. (rifle, scope, rings and sling). Am I giving up too much performance by considering this little rifle? Scope will be a Swarovski Z3 4X12 w/ ballistic reticle (because I bought it before my trip in the attempt to squeeze everything out of the 673).

Hey everyone, I haven't been on for a while but I just wanted to get some opinions on sthe savage twist rate for their 7mm-08 they list a 1:11.5 twist, seems kinda slow does anyone have any experience with 162 A-max bullets out of one of these rifle/twist rate combos. Will that twist rate stabilize 160 class projectiles? I have my doubts but just wanted to see if anyone agrees or disagrees. Thanks in advance for the input!

I read on Noslers site that they have just released a 30 cal E-Tip with a .503 BC. The ballistics look really good in my 06 if I can get similar velocities to what I get with the 168 grain ballistic tips. It maintains minimum recommend impact velocities to over 800 yards at my elk hunting altitude of 9,500+feet. The form factor on this is better than any of the other nosler bullets in 30 caliber and the high weight retention should make this a great elk bullet. I cannot wait to try them out.

I just put together a new medium to long range rifle package for my son who has only just started working and is on a strickt budget.

The rifle is a Tikka T3 SS Laminate in .338WM and the scope is a Clearidge 2.5-12.5x42 Ultra XP5. Mounts are EGW rail glued down and fitted out with Leupold 30mm rings.

He can update with a ACI/ADI indicator and level when he gets the cash.

We sighted it in at 100 yards with some light loads using 225 gn Hornady SP projectiles to run it in. Cleaning between each shot. He then dialed up 9 MOA and put the next two shots into my 10" steel gong @440 yards. Couldn't wipe the smile off his face.:)

I've got an action to use for my first custom rifle. The donor is a Rem 700 BDL, currently chambered in .270 win. Will this action work for a .300 RUM, or do I need to stay with a non-magnum cartridge?

How do you decide on your barrel length? This rifle will be built strictly for shooting whitetails out to 600 yards. Usually from sandbags on a bench, occasionally from prone using bipods or a backpack to rest on. I'm not at all concerned about weight or overall length, a 25 lb rifle with a 36" barrel would be fine if it shoots tight groups.

I was hoping to shoot either 190 or 210 gr VLD's, which require different twist rates according to Berger's website. 1/12" and 1/11" respectively. Which twist rate would allow for a little flexibility in bullet weight?
