Guys with these calibers what are you getting in velocity with the berger 180 vld and 168 vld? I just picked up a 7 rum sendero 2 and am wondering what to expect compared to the 7rm. I was getting an honest 3000 fps with the 180 with no pressure signs. Fast barrel maybe? Also it seems hodgdon's data seems to be very conservative. Does this sound right to you guys? I remember the first can of retumbo I bought(around 4 years ago?) at 68 grains the velocity was near 2900 on the bottle and now it's 2800. My chrono(ced m2) is giving me right at the 3000 range. I have a very, very faint ejector mark in the middle of the summer. Thanks for any input.

After several months of tinkering with my rifle and working up a good hand load I finally broke down and ordered a quality optic as well as a new stock for my gun. I have been using a Nikon Buckmaster 6-18X40 with a target dot and it is a good scope, but it wasnt going to cut it for what Im wanting to do with this rifle so after "shopping" for many months I ponied up and ordered a NightForce NSXII in 5.5-22X50 with the Zero stop turrets and the Mil-dot recticle. Im really excited about it! I also made a call to Stocky's and ordered a new H.S. Percision Pro-Series M24 Verticle grip Varmit/Tacticle in the Olive/black web and it was in stock and shipped out today!! My wife almost ran the car off the road when I told her how much the NightForce cost, but being the good wife she is, she just smiled and said whatever makes you happy dear......I feel that there will be a shopping spree in her future as payback. Anyway I just thought I'd share this with you all. Any pointers or tips on the scope or the stock would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and safe shooting,

The easy way to get a good free ballistics calculator on your BlackBerry!!

So I read most of the suggested articles for installing a ballistics program on a BlackBerry, but most on this site were incomplete or not free. I...

So I read most of the suggested articles for installing a ballistics program on a BlackBerry, but most on this site were incomplete or not free. I found a neat little program that features; pocket pc, trajectory tables, moa range card, mil info and what not. All in all a decent free ballistics program. I did this on an 8520 Curve but most BlackBerry's with sheet to go should run this.

Steps
1. Download Excel Ballistics Calculator to your home PC. Free Ballistic Calculator (FREE Ballistic calculator)

2. Make sure your BlackBerry is running 4.5 or newer operating system, you will need the "sheet to go" to run excel files. PM if you don't know how to do this.

3. On your phone go to Settings > Options > Memory and make sure "Auto enable mass storage mode when connected" is turned on. Some BlackBerry's may not have this option under memory, but search around you will find it.

4. Connect your BlackBerry to your PC using the USB cord. Now go to
My Computer > BlackBerry > BlackBerry > Documents. Now place the ballistics calculator in the documents folder, either use copy and paste or drag and drop the program from the desktop.

5. Disconnect your phone and go to applications "sheet to go" search through your documents and find FBC-V3. Now there are several windows you can view by using the menu key and clicking on worksheets. Enter in all your ballistic info and save your profile. You can set up as many loads as you like, just make sure to name them properly.

Also the Pocket PC mode is great after you enter all your info in. Input the particular range, slope, wind, temp, psi and it will show you the MOA needed to dial in. Perfect for a free program! Any questions or problems just ask, I spent quite a bit of time trying to do this free, since I do not have the data plan.

I hunted a ranch that allows hunters who ask but requires that they shoot a doe before being allowed to take a buck- they have a bit of a deer...

I hunted a ranch that allows hunters who ask but requires that they shoot a doe before being allowed to take a buck- they have a bit of a deer problem. Got a late start and me and a buddy walked out along a bench that looks down into a little creek bottom. I had 2 muley doe tags. Within a half hour I spotted a bunch of muleys down in the creek bottom and they were totally unaware. I got set up and ranged them at 322 yds. The wind was blowing a consistent 25 mph across. I sent the first 200 grain accubond sailing from the 300 RUM and nailed this doe.

The deer didn't know what was going on though they ran a ways, luckily I still had one broadside at now 345 yds. I corrected for wind a little more on the second one, and hit it directly in the heart from 345! Awesome shot! When we got down there to them I could not believe the damage on the first one- hit a little back- most of the insides were on the outside. That Accubond blew a hole about 15" long and the stomach and intestines, liver and other parts were already on the ground.

We got them hauled out and then set out to kill some bucks. I glassed some good muley bucks but I couldn't shoot them because I have a muley tag in another district, so I was limited to whitetail. After seeing about 30 whitetail, and mostly scrubby bucks I had an opportunity at this one- shot him from 100 yds or so, and he is nothing great. I thought he was a lot bigger when I pulled the trigger but he's still one of the biggest bucks I've seen this year. I could have given it another day but I really wanted to get it over with so I can try and kill a bull before the season ends.

Had never taken three in one day before.

Here are a few more hunting pics from the season.

Tough times. Note the complete lack of snow and the shirtsleeve weather. This has been a bummer weather wise. This is a cool spot with some long shot potential- wish some elk would have wandered in there.

I have a friend that is getting hooked on long range hunting. He saw a 300 yard shot take my deer (sorry guys, It was my shortest shot on deer in the last 5 years.) and he was there when my bro connected on a 540 yd elk (although the.338 250 gr SGK performed poorly in securing the animal with 4 hits. First of which hit below the spine by an inch and only clipped the lung. A shot from a .270 actually anchored it.)

Now he wants a long range gun.

He will be killing Mule deer and elk (maybe a moose, maybe a bear, but the focus is elk and mulies) He will often have shots from 0-600 yards but he wants to be able to use the gun for 1000 yard elk as he works up to that. Te longer shots on both deer and elk will be more common as as skills and technique develop. He is looking hard at the 7mm mag chambering but I threw a bunch of numbers at him and asked him to consider a .300 win mag. It will be a new factory rifle and I will do all the basic work on it for him i.e. glass bed and free float and bbl break in and load development and trigger work (where applicable). There may be some minor gunsmithing at some point if needed.

My question is- Of the 2 options which would you pick and why? I'm looking for some good "'ol school" advice. I know as well as anybody that shooting in theory is not the same as shootin on fur.

I did search for info already and spent the last hour combing Darryl Cassels posts for the answer I was looking for. I figured just asking again would be a bit more efficient.

Thanks guys.

The wife and I went out to fill more tags again today. It turned out better than we ever imagined. We set up in a position to take a deer or two that we saw yesterday eve. The walk to the area I wanted to sit up on is about 1.5 miles from the truck. Since this is our first season here is the wide open west, this has taken some time for us to wrap our heads around. We are from Southern Illinois and we rarely walked more than 500 yds to get on stand.

Before we arrived we could see deer starting to come down off of the same hills they did the night before. We couldn't shoot any deer until the crossed the fence into the public walk-in area. We were watching 5 does in front of us at almost 500 yds when I noticed and doe and yearling walking down a small gully on our side of the fence. Shortly after they walked out of the gully and started in our direction Jen said that a buck was following them. I briefly looked him over and decided to give him a shot. She ranged him, I dialed the elevation, and estimated a 10 mph wind from our right to left at about 3/4 to full value. At the shot my bipod moved on the rock and I did not see the impact. The buck made a 10 yd half circle and fell. The doe and yearling stood there looking at him a little too long. I opened the bolt and loaded another round in the single shot. Jen called the same range and this time the bipod did not move. At impact the doe fell like a ton of bricks hit her. Jen saw that the yearling was still standing there looking at both dead deer, and since she still had a doe tag, she almost pushed me out of the way and called for a range. She took a quick click off of the elevation and dumped the yearling. After a few high fives, and hugs, the work started. The ranges were 438, 426, and 412 which are the longest we have been able to harvest any big game (as of now).

As you can see the 7mm SAUM performed perfectly. Jen is planning her custom build now. The walk back to the truck took almost 2 hours and we are glad it's over.

The over the gun view.

A few minutes after the 3 shots.

The end results.

The Cabelas Super Mag Hauler earned it's name.
